Free Advice: Being Agreeable is Overrated

At school, we read "The Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller.  Miller was the nerd who married Marilyn Monroe and gave hope to all us geeks.  One person who did not give hope to anyone was Willy Loman, the tragic lead of the play. He is a horrible salesman who tragically ends his life in a car accident so that his family can receive 20,000 dollars to be used by his son to start his own business.

Willy's biggest flaw is his belief that being well-liked is all one needs to be a good salesman. The play is a strong critique of capitalism and the American Dream, and also a strong commentary on how being agreeable is overrated. No one likes a pushover.  No one likes a spineless jellyfish that says yes to everyone. The business of pleasing people is not good. You will end up making everyone else happy except for yourself.

I am not advocating being a selfish bastard - far from it.  I am saying that you need to work out what you want and work towards it as single-mindedly as possible.   Mark Manson wrote a fantastic book entitled "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" and opens by telling the story of Charles Bukowski. Until the age of 49, he worked in a post office while writing sporadically and focusing more on womanizing, drinking, and doing everything possible to stay out of the army.  At the ripe old age of 50, he published his first novel "Post Office". He went on to publish another five novels and ten nonfiction books. In 1986 Time magazine referred to him as the "laureate of American lowlife".  Charles did not give a royal f*ck what other people thought of him. He was not agreeable, he lived his life as he saw fit and became a prodigious author. He is not the perfect blueprint for modern living, but he lived on his terms.

People try so hard for many things. How often do you hear of a couple that wants to start a family? The wife keeps track of her ovulation cycle with military precision – after months and months of sowing, there is no harvest. Then, at the exact moment they stop trying, the wife falls pregnant. This all sounds a little conflictive. On the one hand, I am saying that you should be single-minded about achieving your goals and on the other hand I am saying you should not give a f*ck.  The Serenity Prayer sums it up best:  "God, grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference."  When the jerk in the Mercedes cuts you off in traffic, you have one of two choices. You can get angry, which fills your body with cortisol – large levels of which can kill brain cells and damage your immune system. The other option is to not give a f*ck, which fills your body with serotonin, which makes you happy and increases your libido.
